Lab 1: Connect to a Horizon desktop
Objective and Tasks
As an introduction to the Horizon 8 Install, Configure, Manage class you will walk through using the Horizon Client. You will authenticate to an existing Horizon 8 environment, and then connect to a Horizon desktop and a published application.
Complete the following tasks:
- Login to ControlCenter VM.
- Use the Horizon Client to connect to the Horizon-02 pod (running on Connection Server horizon-02b.omnissatraining.com).
- Launch a virtual desktop session.
- Launch an RDSH-based published application session.
- Switch to the ControlCenter VM.
- Use the right-hand tool pane in your lab and select the Resources tab.
- Click on the tile for ControlCenter.
- Click on the Ctrl-Alt-Delete button in the ControlCenter tile.
- Log in to the ControlCenter.
- Username: OMINISSATRAINING\Administrator
- Password: Pa$$w0rd
- Verify that you are on the main ControlCenter desktop before proceeding.
You might want to change the display resolution in your ControlCenter VM.
Right-click on the ControlCenter Windows desktop and select Display settings. Then change the Display resolution to what works best for the monitor you are using and to your preference.
Horizon-02b has been pre-installed as a Horizon Connection Server, forming pod Horizon-02. It already has a desktop pool, RDSH published applications, and entitlements setup on it for you to connect to.
- Launch the Omnissa Horizon Client.
- From the ControlCenter desktop, double click the Omnissa Horizon Client.
- Connect to the Horizon-02 pod.
- Click on the 3 dots on the pool tile for horizon-02a.omnissatraining.com and click Connect.
- Alternatively you can double-click on the tile.
- Login and authenticate.
- Username: Student1
- Password : Pa$$w0rd
- Click Login.
- Review the entitlements for Student1 in the Horizon-02 pod.
- The tile Win11-Site2 represents a desktop pool of Windows 11 machines.
- The tile NotepadS2 represents a published application (running on a RDSH server).
- Launch a virtual desktop session.
- Click on the 3 dots on the pool tile for Win11-Site2 and click Launch.
- Alternatively you can double-click on the tile.
- Confirm successful desktop launch.
- Ensure the virtual desktop opens successfully and the user is logged into the Windows desktop.
- Verify that the desktop is functioning properly and the user can interact with the environment (login, desktop display, basic functionality).
- Logout of the virtual desktop.
- Use Windows > Student 1 > Sign out
- Alternatively, you can use the Horizon menubar at the top of the screen, selecting the three dots (...), then Logoff Desktop, and confirm with OK.
- Launch a RDSH-based published application session.
- Click on the 3 dots on the pool tile for NotepadS2 and click Launch.
- Alternatively you can double-click on the tile.
- Confirm successful application launch.
- Notepad will launch. Note that is is displayed windowless as if it is natively running on the local machine.
- Logout of the published application.
- Close Notepad.
- Close the Horizon Client.
