Lab 26: Initialize Cloud Pod Architecture and configure a global entitlement

Objective and Tasks

You can use Cloud Pod Architecture (CPA) to federate one or more Horizon 8 pods together. This allows you to create user assignments using global entitlements that can span multiple pools and multiple Horizon 8 pods.

In this lab, you will perform the following tasks:

  1. Login to the Horizon admin console for the Horizon-01 pod.
  2. Initialize the Cloud Pod Architecture feature on the Horizon-01 pod.
  3. Create a global entitlement.
  4. Add a desktop pool to the global entitlement.
  5. Login to the Horizon admin console for the Horizon-02 pod.
  6. Add a second Horizon pod (Horizon-02) to the CPA federation.
  7. Add a new site and move the Horizon-02 to it.
Expand or collapse content Task 1: Login to the Horizon admin console for the Horizon-01 pod
  1. Open the Horizon admin console for horizon-01a.
    • On your ControlCenter desktop, open the Google Chrome browser.
    • Click the bookmark on the bookmark bar for horizon-01a
    • This will connect you to the Horizon administrator console at https://horizon-01a.omnissatraining.com/admin
  2. Login to the Horizon admin console.
    • Username: administrator
    • Password : Pa$$w0rd
    • Domain: OmnissaTraining
Expand or collapse content Task 2: Initialize the Cloud Pod Architecture feature

The Cloud Pod Architecture feature is initialized on the first pod that you want to be part of the federation. Subsequent pods can be joined to the created federation.

You will initialize the Cloud Pod Architecture feature on the Horizon-01 pod.

  1. Start the wizard to initialize a new Cloud Pod Architecture federation.
    • Navigate to Settings > Cloud Pod Architecture.
    • Click on Initialize the Cloud Pod Architecture feature.
  1. Confirm that you want to create a new Cloud Pod federation.
    • Click on INITIALIZE in the message box that is displayed.
  2. Monitor the initialization progress.
    • The CPA feature is first enabled on the Connection Server you are connected to.
    • Other Connection Server in the same pod will then have the CPA feature enabled on them.
  1. Rename the default site.
    • Navigate to Settings > Sites
    • Select the radio button next to the entry for Default First Site, and click Edit.
    • Change the Name field to Site 1
  2. Provide a site URL to facilitate home site redirection.

Note: You can define additional sites on the Settings > Sites page.

Expand or collapse content Task 3: Create a global entitlement

A global entitlement can contain individual users or user groups. In this task you will create a new global entitlement and entitle the Horizon-Students group.

  1. Start the wizard to add a new global entitlement.
    • Navigate to Inventory > Global Entitlements
    • Click ADD.
  2. Select the Type of entitlement you are creating
    • Ensure the option for Desktop Entitlement is selected.
    • Click NEXT.
  3. Define the General information on the Name and Policies screen:
    • Name: Windows-11
    • Display Name: Windows 11
  4. Define the Policies information on the Name and Policies screen:
    • Change the user assignment to Floating
    • Leave Scope as All Sites but note the available options.
    • Select the option for Use Home Site.
    • Change the Default Display Protocol to Horizon Blast.
    • Select the option for Allow Users to Restart Machines.
    • Click NEXT.

Note the other options that are available for selection on the Names and Policies screen.

  1. Select the Users and Groups to entitle.
    • Click ADD.
    • In the row Name/User Name enter horizon in the right-hand box, and click FIND.
    • Tick the box for the row Horizon-Students that is displayed, and click OK.
    • Click NEXT.
  2. Complete the wizard.
    • Review the settings.
    • Click FINISH.

Note that the Number of Pods in this global entitlement is currently 0. You also need to add at least one desktop pool to this global entitlement.

Expand or collapse content Task 4: Add a desktop pool to the global entitlement

In this task, you will add a desktop pool from the Horizon pod Horizon-01 to the global entitlement.

  1. View the properties of the Global Entitlement.
    • Navigate to Settings > Global Entitlements (you should already be on this screen from the previous task).
    • Select the Global Entitlement by clicking on the Name entry, Windows 11.
  2. Add Local Pools
    • Select the Local Pools tab at the top.
    • Click ADD.
    • Select the local pool, Win11-Site1, and click ADD.

If you do not see the local desktop pool listed, you have a mismatch between the local pool settings and the global entitlement setting. Check settings such as User Assignment (in these labs you should have configured both for Floating).

If you had other Horizon 8 pods that have desktop pools that you wanted to add to a global entitlement, you would repeat this process while connected to the admin console of a Connection Server in that pod.

We will not do that in this lab.

Expand or collapse content Task 5: Login to the Horizon admin console for the Horizon-02 pod

You can add additional Horizon 8 pods to an existing Cloud Pod Architecture federation.

You will now add the Horizon-02 pod to the CPA federation that you created with the Horizon-01 pod.

  1. Open the Horizon admin console for horizon-02a.
    • On your ControlCenter desktop, open a new tab in the Google Chrome browser.
    • Click the bookmark on the bookmark bar for horizon-02a
    • This will connect you to the Horizon administrator console at https://horizon-02a.omnissatraining.com/admin
    • Click on I AGREE on the Attention message.
  2. Login to the Horizon admin console.
    • Username: administrator
    • Password : Pa$$w0rd
    • Domain: OmnissaTraining
Expand or collapse content Task 6: Add a second Horizon pod to the CPA federation
  1. Start the wizard to join an existing Cloud Pod Architecture federation.
    • Navigate to Settings > Cloud Pod Architecture.
    • Click on Join the pod federation.
  2. Connect to existing Connection Server that is already a member of the CPA federation and specify credentials to use.
    • Connection Server: horizon-01a.omnissatraining.com
    • User name: omnissatraining\administrator
    • Password: Pa$$w0rd
    • Click JOIN.
  3. Monitor the progress until it completes before moving onto the next task.
Expand or collapse content Task 7: Add a new site and move the Horizon-02 to it

A CPA federation can contain Horizon 8 pods from both the same site (location) or from different sites. To illustrate this option, you will move this second pod (Horizon-02) to a separate site.

  1. Add a new site to the CPA federation configuration.
  2. Move the Horizon-02 pod to Site 2.
    • Select the radio button next to the entry for Site 1. (This displays the pods currently in Site 1).
    • Select the entry for Cluster-HORIZON-02A, and click the Edit button in the middle of the screen.
    • Change the Site selection to Site 2.
    • Click OK.
  3. Confirm the Cloud Pod Architecture pod and site configuration.
    • Navigate to Settings > Cloud Pod Architecture.
    • Confirm that the two pods are joined to the federation and in the correct sites.

Remember to add local desktop pools from this newly added pod to the appropriate global entitlements.

This concludes this lab.
