Lab 1: Getting started with Omnissa labs

Objectives and Tasks

  1. Understand lab manual conventions and lab resources.
  2. Device requirements for labs.
  3. Verify the availability of tools.
  4. Log into the training servers.
  5. Log into the Workspace ONE UEM console.
  6. Log into the Omnissa Access console.

Task 1: Understanding lab manual conventions and lab resources

Review the lab manual conventions, lab and support resources, and key elements of the user interface.

Typographical conventions

  • Boldface indicates selectable GUI control, including buttons, checkboxes, icons, list items, menus, sliders, and tabs.

Example: Select File > Save As.

Example: Select the Configuration tab.

  • A code block with text in a monospace font indicates command names, command options, parameters, and so on that you enter in a command line. 

Example:  

1. Extract the files from the agent bundle.

tar -zxvf Omnissa-horizonagent-linux-x86_64-2503-8.15.0-14301895253.tar.gz  
  • Monospace font indicates user entry text.

Example: In the Name text box, enter Employee Owned.

Lab architecture and resources

The lab environment utilizes a multi-layered infrastructure to provide you with the resources to complete the tasks listed in the lab manual. These layers are as follows:

SaaS

Workspace ONE UEM and Omnissa Access are cloud-hosted as Software-as-a-Service applications. A new student tenant is provisioned for you when you launch your lab environment for the first time, providing you with a fully functional instance of both products. You will use this tenant throughout the duration of this course.

On Premise : Tier 1

Tier 1 contains virtual resources that are provisioned for you when you first launch the lab environment. These resources included devices you will interact with throughout the lab, as well as infrastructure resources required to support the lab environment. The role of each resource is detailed later in this section.

The diagram below shows you the SaaS services and On-Premises virtual machines you will be interacting within the labs.

The resources included in the lab are listed below.

Lab user interface

There are several key components in the lab user interface that you will interact with throughout this lab. Let's briefly discuss each of them.

(2) VM menuContains virtual machine commands and display settings.
(3) VM SwitcherShows when there are multiple virtual machines attached to the lab and allows you to switch between virtual machines easily.
(4) Full-screenMaximizes the lab window with both, the lab environment and the lab instructions, into full-screen. Use the Escape (Esc) key to exit full-screen.
(5) Instructions panelDisplays the lab instructions and activities.
(6) Resources panelContains lab resources such as virtual machines, cloud resources, and any credentials needed to complete the lab instructions.

Commands menu

The Commands menu offers users advanced functionalities to interact with the virtual machines or cloud platform used in the lab. It provides a variety of basic keyboard commands, including Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Alt+Tab, and Windows key. Additionally, users can access a virtual keyboard if required.

VM menu

The VM menu is a handy feature that lets users send power commands, tweak the virtual machine’s appearance and connection in the lab, and even reconnect to the lab if the connection drops.

VM Switcher

The VM Switcher menu lists all of the VMs configured in the lab. Students use this menu to switch between VMs as required in the lab.

Instructions tab

On the Instructions tab, you can select usernames and passwords to enter them in the working virtual machine automatically.

Support resources

If contacting the support team, you need the instance ID.

In the lab console, select the question mark icon to get the instance ID.

Task 2: Device requirements for labs

An iOS and/or macOS device(s) are supplied as part of the labs included in this lab manual. Although the most of the tasks outlined throughout the lab manual can be performed without a device, it is recommended that an iOS and/or macOS device is used to experience the full results of the tasks performed in this lab.

If you plan to use your own device, it is recommended that the device(s) meet the following minimum requirements.

  • iOS 18+
  • macOS 15+

Task 3: Verify the availability of tools

You verify the availability of tools that you use in the lab environment.

  1. Ensure that the required tools are ready and available.

    • Computer: You must use a PC or Mac that gives you access to the Workspace ONE UEM training environment.

    • Browser: You must use a modern browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge, to access the lab environment. In the lab environment, you must only use the installed Google Chrome browser to complete the lab activities.

iOS and/or macOS devices are not supplied for this lab. Please see Task 2 for details about Apple device requirements.

Task 4: Log into the training servers

Become familiar with the location of the lab Virtual Machines (VMs).

  1. When connected to your lab environment, you will be brought to a screen from the ControlCenter VM, where you can log in.

  2. In the top-left corner of the screen, click on the keyboard icon.

  3. Select the Ctrl+Alt+Delete option.

  4. This will bring up the password entry screen for omnissatraining\Administrator.

    • Password:  Pa$$w0rd.

Alternatively, on the right side of the screen under Connect to ControlCenter, you can click the box labeled Pa$$w0rd. This will automatically enter the password for you, so you don’t need to type it manually.

Task 5: Log into the Workspace ONE UEM console

You log into the Workspace ONE UEM console.

  1. On the ControlCenter desktop, open Google Chrome.

  2. From the bookmarks bar, click Workspace ONE UEM.

Alternatively, you can enter https://omnissatraining.awmdm.com/Airwatch in the address bar to access the console page.

  1. Log in to Workspace ONE UEM Admin console with your unique credentials.

    • Username: studentadmin{labid}

You will see the username on the far right-hand side of the screen, in the box next to UEM Admin Username.  You can type it in yourself, or click on the box, StudentAdmin{########}, to have it automatically type it in for you.  The {########} represents your Lab ID.

  1. Click Next.

  2. Enter the password assigned to your administrator account.

    • Password: Pa$$w0rd

  3. Click Log In.

  4. Click Never if you get any pop-up windows, asking to "Save password?".

  5. Agree and accept the Omnissa General Terms.

  6. Set a Recovery Question and Answer, and set 1234 as your four digit pin.

  7. Click SAVE.

  8. Keep the Workspace ONE UEM console open for later labs.

Task 6: Log into the Omnissa Access console

You set a password and login for the Administrator in Omnissa Access.

  1. Look in the Instructions tab on the far right-hand side of your lab window. The Access Password Reset URL box will be populated with text that looks similar to https://{########}.us0.wss.workspaceone.com/SAAS/... (As shown below).  The {########} represents your Lab ID.

  2. Open a new tab in Google Chrome.

  3. Once the new tab is opened, make sure your mouse cursor is placed into the Chrome browser’s URL.  

  4. From the Instructions bar, click on the box that contains the https://########.us0.wss.workspaceone.com... and hit Enter on your keyboard. Wait for the change your password screen to appear.

  1. Set the Omnissa Admin password.

    1. New Password: Pa$$w0rd

    2. Confirm Password: Pa$$w0rd

    3. Click Change Password.

  2. Click Go to Sign in page.

  3. Log in with your Omnissa Access credentials:

    1. Username: admin

    2. Password: Pa$$w0rd

    3. Click Sign in.

  4. Click Accept at the Terms and Conditions window.

  5. Your Access tenant URL will now show in the URL, as:  https://########.us0.wss.workspaceone.com

    Note:  Make note of your Access tenant URL.

  6. You are logged in to the console as an Omnissa Access administrator.

  7. Keep the Omnissa Access console open for later labs.

If you login to the Omnissa Access console and are directed to the user portal, you can access the administration console by clicking the TA (Tenant Admin) icon in the top-right corner of the page, and select Access Console from the drop-down menu.
