Lab 8: Applications

Objective and Tasks

Provision and manage Windows applications:

  1. Add a Public Application
  2. Manage Public Applications
  3. Add an Internal Application
  4. Manage Internal Applications
  5. Add an application from the Windows Enterprise App Repository
  6. Manage Applications on an Individual Device
  7. View Applications in Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub

This lab requires the core configurations set in previous tasks. Required configurations include an organization group (OG) hierarchy set up with a group ID, test user, and enrolled device.

Task 1: Add a Public Application

You add an Android application to the Workspace ONE UEM console and push this application to the enrolled Android endpoints.

  1. Log in to the ControlCenter desktop VM.
    • User name: administrator
    • Password: Pa$$w0rd
  2. Open Chrome and log in to Workspace ONE UEM.
    • User name: studentadmin{labid}
    • Password: Pa$$w0rd
  3. In the upper-right corner of the console, click the drop-down menu with your administrator name and verify that Student{labid} organization group is selected from the Organization Group drop-down menu.

  4. In the navigation pane on the left, select Resources.
  5. Expand Apps if not already not expanded, and click on Native Apps in the navigation on the left.
  6. Click the Public tab.
  7. Click Add Application.
    • The Add Application dialog box appears.
  8. From the Platform drop-down menu, select Android.
  9. Next to Source, you have SEARCH APP STORE.
  10. In the Name field, type Tube Map - London Underground, and click Search.
  11. Click on the Tube Map - London Underground application from the list, and then click on Select.
  12. Click Save & Assign.
  13. Enter Android Devices in the Name text box.
  14. Click in the Assignment Groups box and select Android Devices({labid}).
  15. Click Create.
  16. You will see your assignment.
  17. Click Save.
  18. Click Publish.

Task 2: Manage Public Applications

You manage the public applications added to your Workspace ONE UEM tenant.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the console, click the drop-down menu with your administrator name and verify that Student{labid} organization group is selected from the Organization Group drop-down menu.
  2. In the navigation pane at the top, select Resources. Then, under Apps, select Native Apps.
  3. Click the Public tab. You can see all the managed applications on the Apps List View page.
  4. Under Install Status, click View.

If the app is not assigned to any device, the link reads Assign.

You can see the number of devices that have a Not Installed, Installed, or Assigned status for this application.

Devices might require a check-in (query) to show an updated status if the application is installed on the device but does not show an updated status on the Application List View page.

  1. Click the application name to open a detail view page of the app.
  2. Review the tabs on the Details View page.
    • Devices: See the application assignment and installation status on each assigned device.
    • Assignment: View application assignments.
    • Details: View general information about this application.
    • More: Manage the application's icon image and terms of use.
  3. Underneath the name of the application, click the More Actions drop-down menu and review the available options.
    • Delete Application: Remove the application from Workspace ONE UEM.
    • User Ratings: View application ratings and user-provided feedback.
    • Events: Display events for applications and export activity as a CSV file.

Task 3: Add an Internal Application

You add a second application by uploading the Win32 application installer file.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the console, click the drop-down menu with your administrator name and verify that Student{labid} organization group is selected from the Organization Group drop-down menu.
  2. In the navigation pane at the top, select Groups & Settings. Then, click All Settings, expand Devices & Users > Microsoft > Windows > Intelligent Hub Application.
  3. Next to Current Settings, click Override.
  4. Select the Publish Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub and Intelligent Hub Automatic Updates check boxes.
  5. Select every check box in the Device Ownership Type row.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Close the Settings dialog box.
  8. In the navigation pane on the left, select Resources. Then, under Apps, click Native Apps.
  9. On the Internal tab, click Add. Click Application File.
  10. Ensure that Student{labid} is selected in the Organization Group ID box.
  11. Click Upload.
    • The Add dialog box appears.
  12. Click Choose File.
  13. Navigate to the S:\Software folder and open the VLC folder.
  14. Select the vlc-3.0.23-win64.exe file and click Open.
  15. Click Save.
  16. Click Continue and review the general application details.
  17. Click the Details tab. For Supported Processor Architecture, select 64-bit.
  18. Click the Deployment Options tab and scroll to the How To Install section.
  19. In the Install Command field, enter vlc-3.0.23.-win64.exe /S.
  20. Scroll down to the When To Call Install Complete section. Select Yes next to Use Additional Criteria.
  21. For Identify Application By, select Defining Criteria.
  22. Click Add.
  23. From the Criteria Type dropdown, select File exists.
  24. Enter C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc--win64.exe in the Path field. Leave the Version and Modified On field at their default values.
  25. Click Add.
  26. Click the Files tab. Scroll down to the App Uninstall Process section.
  27. For Custom Script Type, select Input.
  28. In the Uninstall Command field, enter C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\uninstall.exe /S
  29. Click Save & Assign.
  30. Configure the assignment settings.
  31. Enter Windows Desktop Devices in the Name text box.
  32. Click in the Assignment Groups text box and select Windows Desktop Devices.
  33. In the App Delivery Method row, click Auto.
  34. Click Create.
  35. Click Save.
  36. Click Publish.

The software package is automatically downloaded and installed once you have a Windows machine enrolled.

The software distribution and installation process can take a while to complete.

Task 4: Manage Internal Applications

You manage the internal applications that you added to your Windows Desktop device.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the console, click the drop-down menu with your administrator name and verify that Student{labid} organization group is selected from the Organization Group drop-down menu.
  2. In the navigation pane on the left, select Resources. Then, under Apps, click Native Apps > Internal.
  3. Review all the managed applications on the Apps List View page.
  4. Under Install Status, click View to verify the installation status of the application.

Applications might require a check-in (query) to show an up-to-date status. The check-in is necessary if the application is installed on the device but is not reflected on the status dashboard.

  1. Click the application name to open the page about the details of the app.
    • The App Details View page includes the Devices, Assignments, Details, Files, and More tabs. Each tab shows you the related application information.
  2. Review the internal application management controls below the application name.
    • Edit: Modify some levels of application information.
    • Assign: Assign applications on the Assignment page.
    • Deactivate: Deactivate and remove all versions of the application from the device and the Workspace ONE UEM catalog.
    • More Actions: Access additional management controls.
  3. Click More Actions to review additional management controls.
    • Add Version: Upload a new version of the same internal application.
    • Other Versions: Show previous versions of the application added to the console.
    • Delete Application: Remove the application from Workspace ONE UEM.
    • User ratings: View and delete user ratings and comments about applications.
    • Events: Show device and console events for applications and export events as a CSV file.
    • Retire: Retiring a version of an application uninstalls that version of the app from all devices where it is managed by Workspace ONE.  The next lower version of the app is pushed out to assigned devices.

Task 5: Add an application from the Windows Enterprise App Respository

You add an application from the Windows Enterprise App Respository.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the console, click the drop-down menu with your administrator name and verify that Student{labid} organization group is selected from the Organization Group drop-down menu.

  2. From the navigation at the top, select Resources. Then, click Native Apps, and then seldct Internal.

  3. Click Add, and select From Enterprise App Repository.

  4. In the Search field, enter tunnel.

  5. From the search results, select on Omnissa Workspace ONE Tunnel from the search results.

  6. Accept the default settings, and click Next.

  7. On the Configuration screen, accept the defaults and click Save.

  8. On the Distribution screen, enter Tunnel users in the Name field.

  9. Click in the Assignment Groups field, and select Windows Desktop Devices.

  10. Set the following additional settings as listed below.

    • Deployment begins: Set to a time yesterday.

    • App Delivery method:Auto

  11. From the left hand navigation, click Restrictions.

  12. Click the buttons to enable Make App MDM Managed and Desired State Management.

  13. Click Create.

  14. Click Save.

  15. Click Publish.

Task 6: Manage Applications on an Individual Device

You practice application management on an individual device.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the console, click the drop-down menu with your administrator name and verify that Student{labid} organization group is selected from the Organization Group drop-down menu.
  2. In the navigation pane on the left, select Devices. Click Devices.
  3. Click the friendly name hyperlink of your Windows Desktop device to view specific device details in the record.
  4. Click the Apps tab and review the application status for your device.
  5. Click an application name to review the settings.

In the dialog box that appears, you also have the option to install or remove the application.

If personal applications are not shown, your Privacy settings are configured to suppress this information. The Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub application cannot be removed or pushed again because it was installed before enrollment.

  1. Click Cancel.

Task 7: View Applications in the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub

You navigate the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub application and become familiar with the Hub Catalog user interface.

  1. From the VM Switcher, connect to the W11-Client-01 VM.
  2. Open the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub application if it is not already open.
  3. On the W11Client-01 VM Windows desktop, click the Start menu icon.
  4. Select Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub from the list of available applications.
  5. If necessary, log in to the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub.
    • User name: craig
    • Password: Pa$$w0rd
  6. In the left navigation pane of the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub application, select Apps.
  7. Review the native applications assigned to the device.
