Lab 4: Instant Clone Pool Maintenance Operations

The overall objective of this lab is to demonstrate what might be involved and how complicated maintenance operations might get when having to update the base image natively.

Expand or collapse content Part 1. Updating a Windows based Instant Clone Pool

We will carry out the following steps to update the pool

  1. Deploy Dynamic Environment Manager Agent
  2. Deploy App Volumes Agent
  3. We will update the Gold image with PDF24
  4. Create a new snapshot of the gold image VM
  5. Update the Desktop Pool using the updated Golden Image
Expand or collapse content Step 1. Deploying the Dynamic Environment Manager FlexEngine in NOAD Mode.
  1. From the ControlCenter VM
    • Launch Google Chrome
    • From the Favorites Bookmark
    • Click on vcenter-01a
    • From the vCenter Inventory,
      • Power On W11PreBuilt
      • From the vSphere Client, open the console of the W11PreBuilt VM
      • Go to the taskbar in W11PreBuilt VM
      • open the Folder icon
  1. In the W11PreBuilt window
    • from the QuickAccess bar
      • select This PC > Local Disk (C:)
      • in the Local Disk (C:) area
      • select and right-click
        • from the dropdown
          • select New > Folder
        • In the folder name
          • enter DEM
      • select and right DEM
        • from the dropdown
          • select Open
  1. On the W11PreBuilt desktop
    • Go to Start Menu > Run
    • In the Run window,
    • Go to \\horizon-01a.techseals.co\software
    • Username: administrator
    • Password: Pa$$w0rd
  1. On the W11PreBuilt desktop
    • In the Software folder
      • open the following path
        • open DEM > 2503 > Omnissa -DEM-Enterprise-2503--10.15
          • select and right-click Omnissa Dynamic Environment Manager Enterprise 2503 10.15x64
          • from the dropdown
            • select Copy
  1. On the W11PreBuilt desktop
    • switch to your C:\DEM folder
      • In the DEM folder
        • select and right-click
      • from the dropdown
        • select Paste
  1. On the W11PreBuilt desktop
    • switch back to your Software > DEM folder
    • In the DEM folder
      • select and right-click NOADCMD
      • from dropdown
        • select Open
  1. In the Notepad window
    • Select and Copy the complete text
  1. On the W11PreBuilt desktop
    • In the Start Menu
    • Search for Command Prompt
      • Right Click and select Run as Administrator
  1. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window
    • enter
 cd c:\dem
  • with your keyboard
    • Press Enter
  1. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window
    • Paste the copied data
      • with your keyboard
        • press CTRL+V
        • In the Warning window
          • select Paste anyway
      • with your keyboard
        • press ENTER
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • In the Quick Access bar
      • select This PC
      • under Devices and Drives
        • select and open Local Disk (C:)
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • Local Disk (C:)
      • open the Dem folder
    • select and right-click InstallDEM
      • select Open
  1. In the Notepad window
    • scroll down to the bottom of the window
      • note that the Dynamic Environment Manager has installed successfully

To prepare for the next task, on the W11PreBuilt close the Notepad, File Explorer and Command Prompt windows

  1. On the W11PreBuilt desktop
    • from the Taskbar
    • select and right-click the START button
    • From the pop-up, Select Run
  1. From the Run window
    • next to Open:
      • enter \\horizon-01a.techseals.co\software
    • select OK
  1. In the Software folder
    • On the W11PreBuilt desktop
      • select and open the software shortcut to
        • browse to App Volumes > 2503 > Install > Installation
        • select and double-click Setup.msi
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup deploy wizard
    • "Welcome Wizard"
      • select Next
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup deploy wizard
    • App Volumes Install Screen
      • note that Install App Volumes Agent is the default
      • select Install
  1. In the App Volumes Agent Setup deploy wizard
    • "Welcome Wizard"
      • select Next
  1. In the App Volumes Agent deploy wizard
    • Select Connect to App Volumes Manager
    • Select Next
    • Below App Volumes Manager Address:
      • enter appvol-01a.techseals.co
        • select Next
  1. In the App Volumes Agent deploy wizard
    • next to Non-persistent or multi-session machines
      • ensure the button is selected
    • select Next
  1. In the App Volumes Agent deploy wizard
    • Ready to Install App Volumes Agent
      • select Install
  1. In the App Volumes Agent Setup wizard
    • select Finish
  1. In the App Volumes Agent Setup window
    • select Yes
  1. On the W11PreBuilt (After restart, if you are already logged in, skip Step 11 and Step 12)
    • login again
      • In the top right corner
        • select Send Ctrl+Alt+Delete
  1. On the W11PreBuilt
    • In the login area
      • under Administrator
        • enter Pa$$w0rd
        • select the Submit button

  1. On the W11PreBuilt VM Desktop
    • from the Taskbar
      • select and right-click the START button
        • from the pop-up
          • select Run
  1. From the Run window
    • next to Open:
      • enter \\horizon-01a.techseals.co\software
      • If prompted, enter
      • Username: administrator
      • Password: Pa$$w0rd
        • select OK
  1. On the File Explorer window
    • Software folder
      • select and open Applications
        • In the Applications folder
        • select and right-click PDF24-creator
          • In the dropdown menu
            • select Open
  1. In the Installer window
    • Select I accept the agrement
    • select Next
  1. In the PDF24 Creator Installation wizard
    • select Next
  1. In the PDF24 Creator Installation wizard
    • select Next
  1. In the PDF24 Creator Installation wizard
    • select Finish
  1. In PDF24 Creator Installation wizard
    • select Install
  1. Once the installation of PDF24 Creator is complete
    • Open PDF24 Launcher from the desktop
    • Change Settings > Updates
    • Disable checking and installing updates.
  1. Close all the windows opened inside the W11PreBuilt VM
    • select and right-click the START button
      • from the Menu
        • select Shut down or sign out > Shut down

  1. In the vSphere client
    • In the Host & Clusters inventory
      • select and right-click W11PreBuilt
    • from the pop-out menu
      • select Snapshots > Take Snapshot...
  1. In the Take Snapshot window
    • next to Name
      • enter AppVolAgent_PDF24_install
    • select CREATE

      • In the Horizon Login window
        • User Name area

        • select SIGN IN
  1. In the Horizon Admin Console
    • In the left pane
      • under Inventory,
        • select Desktops
  1. In the Desktop Pools area
    • Click the desktop pool name W11-INST
  1. In the W11-Inst property area
    • Summary tab
      • next to MAINTAIN
        • from the Dropdown
          • select Schedule
  1. In the Schedule Push image wizard
    • step 1. Image
      • next to AppVolAgent_PDF24_install
        • select the radio button
          • select NEXT
  1. In the Add Pool wizard
    • step 2. Schedule
      • next to Force users to log off
        • select the radio button
      • next to Stop at first error
        • uncheck the checkbox
      • select NEXT
  1. In the Schedule Push image wizard
    • step 3. Ready to Complete
      • select FINISH
  1. Under the Summary tab,
    • scroll down to Secondary Image
      • view the progress of the pool being Provisioned
    • to the right notice the State is Publishing

NOTE: The page does not dynamically update. In the top right corner of the page, select the refresh icon.

  1. On your vSphere Client
    • In the Hosts & Clusters view
      • In the Recent Tasks area
        • monitor the progress of the provisioning and the steps
  1. In the Horizon Admin Console
  • W11-Inst properties
    • Summary tab
    • when the provisioning is done,
      • note the State will say Published
  1. In the Horizon Admin Console
  • W11-Inst properties
    • Next to the Summary tab
      • select Machines
  1. In Machines
    • to view the Machine Status ,
      • use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window
        • scroll right.
    • refresh until the Status shows Available for your Machines

  1. On your ControlCenter server,
    • On the Desktop, open Remote Desktop > Site 1 folder
    • Launch W11Client-01a.RDP Remote Desktops session
    • If prompted, login username: techseals\craig
    • Password: Pa$$w0rd
  1. On your W11Client-01a
    • from the Desktop
      • launch the Horizon Client shortcut
    • on the Horizon Client,
      • in the horizon-01a.techseals.co url area
        • In the bottom right corner
          • select the more icon,
        • from the dropdown
          • select Connect
  1. In the Horizon Client textbox
    • in the Enter your user name area
      • enter craig
    • in the Enter your password area
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
        • select Login
  1. In the Horizon Client
    • double click the W11-INST Pool
      • you will be presented with the desktop
  1. On your W11Client-01a desktop,
    • note you have a PDF24 Launcher shortcut on your desktop
      • close all windows
  1. On your W11Client-01a desktop,
    • Using the Horizon Client, select the three dots from the menu at the top, and then the option to Log off Desktop
      • Log off Desktop
        • In the Disconnect and log off desktop?
          • select OK
