18. Using AppCapture.exe to capture Packages

As a minimum requirement, you must complete Lab 2 , Lab 6 and Lab 12, Lab 15, Lab 16 and Lab 17  before starting this lab.

Part 1. Installing the AppCapture tools
  1. On your ControlCenter server desktop
    • select and open the Remote Desktops > Site 1 folder
      • In the Site 1 folder
        • select and launch the appvolprov-01a.RDP  shortcut

 

  1. On the appVolprov-01a desktop
    • select and open the software shortcut
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • Software folder
    • browse to the App Volumes > 2412 > Installation folder
      • select and Launch Setup.msi
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup wizard
    • select Next
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup wizard
    • next to Install App Volumes Tools
      • select the radio button
    • at the bottom of the window
      • select Install
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup wizard
    • Welcome to the App Volumes Tools Setup Wizard
      • select Next
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup wizard
    • Ready to Install App Volumes Tools
      • select Install
    • On the App Volumes Tools Setup window
      • select OK
  1. In the App Volumes Installer Setup wizard
    • Completed the App Volumes Tools Setup Wizard page
      • select Finish
    • on the App Volumes Tools Setup restart window
      • select Yes
  1. On your Control Center server
    • open your Site 1  Chrome Browser
      • on the Favourites Bar
        • select the vcenter-01a shortcut
  1. In the vSphere client area
    • In the username area
    • In the password area
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • At the bottom of the screen
      • select LOGIN
  1. In the vSphere client
    • select and right-click appVolprov-01a
      • from the dropdown
        • select Snapshots > Take Snapshot....
  1. In the Take snapshot window
    • in line with Name
      • enter App Volumes Tools
    • next to include virtual machine's memory
      • uncheck the checkbox
    • at the bottom of the window
      • select CREATE
Part 2. Performing a Package capture with AppCapture.exe
  1. On your ControlCenter server desktop
    • select and open the Remote Desktops > Site 1 folder
      • In the Site 1 folder
        • select and launch the appvolprov-01a.RDP  shortcut

 

  1. On the AppVolprov-01a desktop
    • select the software shortcut
  1. In the File Explorer - Software window
    • open Applications
      • select and right-click GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi
    • from the dropdown
      • select Copy
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • browse to  C:\Program Files\Omnissa\AppVolumes\Agent
    • In the Agent folder
      • select and right-click
        • select Paste

Browse the Agent folder, note that the appcapture.exe Tool is no longer installed under Program Data but Program Files

  1. On the appVolprov-01a desktop
    • on the Desktop
    • select and right-click the Command Prompt shortcut
      • from the Pop-Up window
        • select Run as administrator
  1. In the Command Prompt window
    • enter
cd C:\Program Files\Omnissa\AppVolumes\Agent
  • with your keyboard
    • select ENTER
  1. In the Command Prompt window
    • enter
dir
  • with your keyboard
    • select ENTER

Notice, in the Agent folder,   we have appcapture.exe

  1. In the Command Prompt window
    • enter
appcapture.exe /new GoogleChrome

 

 

  1. In the Command Prompt window
    • type GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi
      • with your keyboard
        • Press ENTER
  • The Google Installer will execute with no prompts
  • You might have to Minimize the Command Prompt before proceeding to the next Step
  1. On the appVolProv-01a Desktop
    • select the Google Chrome shortcut
      • launch the Google Chrome browser
      • validate that the Chrome Browser is running
      • when done Close the Chrome Browser
  1. On the appVolProv-01a Desktop
    • from the Command Prompt
      • enter
appcapture.exe /end
  • with your Keyboard
    • Press ENTER

the appVolProv-01a virtual machine will reboot

  1. On your ControlCenter server desktop
    • select and open the Remote Desktops > Site 1 folder
      • In the Site 1 folder
        • select and launch the appvolprov-01a.RDP  shortcut

 

  1. On the appVolprov-01a Desktop
    • Notice the finalizing finishes off and eventually both .VHD & a .VMDK version of your Package will be available
  1. On the AppVolProv-01a desktop
    • from the Taskbar
      • select and open the folder icon
      • In the File Explorer > Quick Access bar
      • select This PC
        • expand This PC
          • select Local Disk (C:)
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • to the right of View
      • select the MORE Icon
      • from the dropdown
        • select Options
  1. In the Folder Options window
    • select the View tab
      • under the View tab > Advanced settings area
        • below Hidden files and folders
          • next to Show hidden files, folders, and drives
            • select the radio button
        • next to Hide extensions for known file types
          • uncheck the checkbox
        • next to Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
          • uncheck the checkbox
          • in the Warning window
            • select Yes
      • to close and save the Folder Options windows
        • select OK
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • browse to ProgramData > Omnissa > AppVolumes > Packages
    • In the appvhds folder
      • select Type until the JSON and VMDK file are side by side
      • select and right-click both
        • the GoogleChrome.vmdk
        • and the GoogleChrome.json file
        • In the dropdown
          • select Copy
  1. On the appVolProv-01a desktop
    • select and open the software shortcut
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • from Software ,
      • open the App Volumes folder
    • in the App Volumes folder
      • select and right-click
        • from the dropdown
          • select Paste
Part 3. Package Upload into App Volumes Manager
  1. On your ControlCenter server desktop
    • open the Remote Desktops > Site1 folder
      • In the Site 1 folder
      • open and launch Appvol-01a.RDP
  1. In the Appvol-01a server
    • on the desktop
      • select and open the software shortcut
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • Software folder
      • select and open the App Volumes folder
        • select both
          • the GoogleChrome.vmdk
          • and GoogleChrome.json file
            • and right-click
        • from the dropdown
          • select Copy
      • In the Quick Access bar
        • select This PC
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • under This PC
      • select Local Disk (C:)
        • in the right pane
          • select and browse to Local Disk (C:) Program Files (x86) > CloudVolumes > Manager > ppv >
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • PPV folder
    • select & right-click
      • from the dropdown
        • select New > Folder
          • name the new folder packages
  1. In the File Explorer window
    • Packages folder
      • select & right-click
        • from the dropdown
          • select Paste

Note you should have a .JSON file and a .VMDK File

  1. On your ControlCenter server
    • Site 1 Chrome Browser
      • from the Favourites Bar
        • select the App Volumes shortcut
  1. In the App Volumes login
    • below Username
      • enter administrator
    • below Password
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • select LOGIN
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • select CONFIGURATION > Storage
      • select UPLOAD TEMPLATES
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • Storage area
      • under Filename
        • in line with the GoogleChrome_workstation.vmdk line
          • select the checkbox
      • In the bottom right-corner
        • select UPLOAD
  1. In the Confirm Upload Templates window
    • select UPLOAD

In the top right corner wait for the UPLOAD wheel to complete before moving onward

  1. In the App Volumes managerwindow
    • select INVENTORY > Applications
    • expand GoogleChrome

Note your Application has one Package.
The Application still requires an Assignment.

Part 4. Administration of the Application
  1. In the Applications tab
    • In line with GoogleChrome
      • select ASSIGN
  1. In the Assign Application: GoogleChrome area
    • in line with Search Active Directory
      • enter IT Support
      • select SEARCH
    • in line with TECHSEALS\IT Support
      • select the Checkbox
    • in the bottom right corner
      • select ASSIGN
  1. In the Confirm Assign window
    • select ASSIGN
  1. In the App Volumes Admin Console
    • INVENTORY tab
      • select the Packages tab
      • under Packages
        • expand GoogleChrome
    • In line  GoogleChrome
      • select SET CURRENT
  1. In the Confirm Set CURRENT window
    • select SET CURRENT
Part 5. Testing the Google Application Capture Result with Horizon
  1. On your Control Center server
    • select your Horizon shortcut
  1. In the Horizon Client
    • select horizon-01a.techseals.co
  1. In the Horizon Sign in window
    • In the username area
    • in the password area
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • select Login
  1. In the Horizon Client
    • select Enterprise_Desktop
  1. In the Horizon Client
    • select and launch the Google Chrome Client
  1. In the Horizon client
    • Note you now have a Chrome Application running
    • You can now log off the session
