16. Multi-site Functionality with App Volumes

As a minimum requirement, you must complete Lab 15 before starting this lab

App Volumes has Administrative features that enhance administration and lower the workload of the administrator in a multi-site scenario where there might be more than one instance of App Volumes.

We will focus on the administrative function of replicating Packages and user Entitlements from one site to another.

In our lab environment we have two Horizon vSphere based PODS being supported by two App Volumes Managers, each with their own Microsoft SQL Database

Part 1: Configuring Package replication across Sites for Site 1

On your ControlCenter server
- open your Site 1 Browser
  - in the Favourites Bar
    - select the App Volumes shortcut
  - in the App Volumes log in
    - below Username:
      - enter administrator
    - below Password
      - enter Pa$$w0rd
    - select LOGIN

In the App Volumes admin Console
- select the INFRASTRUCTURE tab
  - under INFRASTRUCTURE
    - select Storage Groups
  - under Storage Groups
    - select CREATE STORAGE GROUP

In the App Volumes admin console
- Create Storage Group area
  - configure the following:
    - next to Group Name:
      - enter Tech Seals apps
    - Application Packages section
      - Automation: section
        
        next to Automatically Replicate Application Packages
        
        select the checkbox
      - Stages to Replicate: section
        
        next to All
        
        uncheck the checkbox
        
        next to New / Tested / Published
        
        select the checkbox
    - Writable Volumes section
      - next to Distribution Strategy
        
        from the dropdown
        
        ensure Spread is selected
      - next to Template Storage
        
        select vcenter-01a.techseals.co: [Region01A] CorpLun-01a
    - Storage section
      - next to Selection Method:
        
        from the dropdown
        
        select Direct
      - Storage Locations:
        
        next to vcenter-01a.techseals.co: [Region01A] CorpLun-01a (VMFS)
        
        select the checkbox
        
        next to vcenter-01a.techseals.co: [Region01A] CorpNFS (NFS)
        
        select the checkbox
  - select CREATE

In the Confirm Create Storage Group window
- select CREATE

In the App Volumes manager Admin console
- In the INFRASTRUCTURE environment
  - select the Storages tab
- In Managed Storage Locations
  - expand CorpNFS
    - in line with CorpNFS
      - next to Existing
        
        select the checkbox
    - at the bottom of the page
      - select SET NOT ATTACHABLE
  - In the Confirm Setting As Set as Not Attachable window
    - select SET AS NOT ATTACHABLE

In the App Volumes manager Admin console
- In the INFRASTRUCTURE environment
  - select the Storage Groups tab
    - in the Storage Groups area
      - next to Tech Seals apps
        
        select the expand button
      - in the right-side of the window
        
        select REPLICATE

In the Confirm Replicate window
- select REPLICATE

Part 2: Configuring Package replication across sites for Site 2

On your ControlCenter server
- open your Site 2 Browser
  - in the Favourites Bar
    - select the App Volumes shortcut
  - in the App Volumes Log in
    - next to Username:
      - enter administrator
    - next to Password
      - enter Pa$$w0rd
    - select LOGIN
- In the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) window
  - select OK

In the App Volumes admin Console
- select the INFRASTRUCTURE tab
  - under INFRASTRUCTURE
    - select Storage Groups
  - under Storage Groups
    - select CREATE STORAGE GROUP

In the App Volumes admin console
- Create Storage Group area
  - configure the following:
    - next to Group Name:
      - enter Tech Seals Apps
    - in the Application Packages section
      - in line with Automation:
        
        next to Automatically Import AppStacks and Packages
        
        select the checkbox

Note Stages to Replicate is a new feature fromApp Volumes 2406

In the App Volumes admin console
- Create Storage Group area
  - configure the following:
    - next to Stages to Replicate:
      - next to All
        
        uncheck the checkbox
      - next to New / Tested / Published
        
        check the checkbox

In the App Volumes admin console
- Writable Volumes area
  - next to Distribution Strategy
    - from the dropdown
      - select Spread
  - next to Template Storage
    - from the dropdown
      - select vcenter-02a.techseals.co: [Region02a] CorpLun-02b
- In the Storage area
  - next to the Storage Method sub-section
    - from the dropdown
      - select Direct
  - next to the Storage Locations: sub-section
    - next to vcenter-02a.techseals.co: [Region02a] CorpLun-02b (VMFS)
      - select the checkbox
    - next to vcenter-02a.techseals.co: [Region02A] CorpNFS (NFS)
      - select the checkbox
- select CREATE

In the Confirm Create Storage Group window
- select CREATE

In the App Volumes manager Admin console
- In the INFRASTRUCTURE environment
  - select the Storages tab
- In Managed Storage Locations
  - expand CorpNFS
    - in line with CorpNFS
      - next to Existing
        
        select the checkbox
    - select SET NOT ATTACHABLE
  - In the Confirm Setting As Set as Not Attachable window
    - select SET AS NOT ATTACHABLE

In the Storage Groups area
- next to Tech Seals apps
  - select the expand button
- In the right side of the window
  - select REPLICATE

In the Confirm Replicate window
- select REPLICATE

In the App Volumes admin console
- INFRASTRUCTURE >
  - select the Storages tab
    - expand CorpNFS
      - note the NFS Volume now has data in it

In the App Volumes admin console
- INFRASTRUCTURE > Storages area
  - expand CorpLun-02b
    - note the Volume now has data in it,

If there are no Packages in CorpLun-02b carry on with Part 3 and come back to this interface and recheck

Part 3: Integrating App Volumes instances

To keep application data and assignments synchronized, between App Volumes instances on Site 1 and Site 2, we will establish and manage sources to target relationships

Section 1: Integrating App Volumes instances for Site 1

On the App Volumes Manager for Site 1
- INFRASTRUCTURE tab
  - select Instances
- In the App Volumes Instances area
  - note the Instance Details

In earlier versions we had to edit the URL, from the 2412 release, this is populated by default

In the App Volumes Instances area
- In the right-side of the window
  - select ADD TARGET

In the Instances tab
- In the Add App Volumes Instance Target area
  - next to Secure Address
    - enter 192.168.210.91:443
  - next to Username:
    - enter administrator
  - next to Password:
    - enter Pa$$w0rd
  - next to Domain:
    - TECHSEALS (default)
  - next to Application Package Import:
    - select the checkbox
  - next to Package Symmetry Assurance:
    - select the checkbox
  - next to Synchronize Markers:
    - select the checkbox
  - next to Synchronize Assignments:
    - select the checkbox
- In the bottom left-corner
  - select SAVE
- In the Add Target Instance window
  - select ADD
- In the Untrusted Certificate window
  - select ACCEPT

In the App Volumes Instances window
- next to APPVOL-02A
  - select the expand icon

In the App Volumes Instances window
- select SYNCHRONIZE
  - In the Confirm Synchronize window
    - select SYNCHRONIZE

Section 2: Integrating App Volumes instances for Site 2

On the App Volumes Manager for Site 2
- INFRASTRUCTURE tab
  - select Instances
- In the App Volumes Instances area
  - note that under Instance details this is already populated
- Below the related Instance area
  - note that APPVOL-01a is the Source of the metadata

On the App Volumes Manager for Site 2
- select the INVENTORY tab
  - select the Applications tab
    - notice that you have your Applications and Packages delivered to Site 2

On the App Volumes Manager for Site 2
- Expand Mozilla Firefox
  - to the right
    - select MANAGE SOURCE

On your Site 2 Chrome Browser
- Note you have been re-directed back to Site 1's App Volumes
- If an administrator wanted to edit the Package
  - They would have to select the correct Domain, enter the required administrative credentials and then Login
