16. Multi-site Functionality with App Volumes

As a minimum requirement, you must complete Lab 15 before starting this lab

App Volumes has Administrative features that enhance administration and lower the workload of the administrator in a multi-site scenario where there might be more than one instance of App Volumes.

We will focus on the administrative function of replicating Packages and user Entitlements from one site to another.

In our lab environment we have two Horizon vSphere based PODS being supported by two App Volumes Managers, each with their own Microsoft SQL Database

Part 1: Configuring Package replication across Sites for Site 1
  1. On your ControlCenter server
    • open your Site 1 Browser
      • in the Favourites Bar
        • select the App Volumes shortcut
      • in the App Volumes log in
        • below Username:
          • enter administrator
        • below Password
          • enter Pa$$w0rd
        • select LOGIN
  1. In the App Volumes admin Console
    • select the INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • under INFRASTRUCTURE
        • select Storage Groups
      • under Storage Groups
        • select CREATE STORAGE GROUP
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • Create Storage Group area
      • configure the following:
        • next to Group Name:
          • enter Tech Seals apps
        • Application Packages section
          • Automation: section
            • next to Automatically Replicate Application Packages
              • select the checkbox
          • Stages to Replicate: section
            • next to All
              • uncheck the checkbox
            • next to New / Tested / Published
              • select the checkbox
        • Writable Volumes section
          • next to Distribution Strategy
            • from the dropdown
              • ensure Spread is selected

Part 2: Configuring Package replication across sites for Site 2

      • in the App Volumes Log in
        • next to Username:
          • enter administrator
        • next to Password
          • enter Pa$$w0rd
        • select LOGIN
    • In the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) window
      • select OK

    • select the INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • under INFRASTRUCTURE
        • select Storage Groups
      • under Storage Groups
        • select CREATE STORAGE GROUP
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • Create Storage Group area
      • configure the following:
        • next to Group Name:
          • enter Tech Seals Apps
        • in the Application Packages section
          • in line with Automation:
            • next to Automatically Import AppStacks and Packages
              • select the checkbox

Note Stages to Replicate is a new feature fromApp Volumes 2406

      • select the Storages tab
        • expand CorpNFS
          • note the NFS Volume now has data in it
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • INFRASTRUCTURE > Storages area
      • expand CorpLun-02b
        • note the Volume now has data in it,

If there are no Packages in CorpLun-02b carry on with Part 3 and come back to this interface and recheck

Part 3: Integrating App Volumes instances

To keep application data and assignments synchronized, between App Volumes instances on Site 1 and Site 2, we will establish and manage sources to target relationships

Section 1: Integrating App Volumes instances for Site 1
  1. On the App Volumes Manager for Site 1
    • INFRASTRUCTURE tab
      • select Instances
    • In the App Volumes Instances area
      • note the Instance Details

In earlier versions we had to edit the URL, from the 2412 release, this is populated by default

  1. In the App Volumes Instances area
    • In the right-side of the window
      • select ADD TARGET
  1. In the Instances tab
    • In the Add App Volumes Instance Target area
      • next to Secure Address
        • enter 192.168.210.91:443
      • next to Username:
        • enter administrator
      • next to Password:

      • next to Domain:
        • TECHSEALS (default)
      • next to Application Package Import:
        • select the checkbox
      • next to Package Symmetry Assurance:

      • note that APPVOL-01a is the Source of the metadata

    • select the INVENTORY tab
      • select the Applications tab
        • notice that you have your Applications and Packages delivered to Site 2
  1. On the App Volumes Manager for Site 2
    • Expand Mozilla Firefox
      • to the right
        • select MANAGE SOURCE
  1. On your Site 2 Chrome Browser
    • Note you have been re-directed back to Site 1's App Volumes
    • If an administrator wanted to edit the Package
      • They would have to select the correct Domain, enter the required administrative credentials and then Login
