Lab 02: Configuring App Volumes Published Apps on Demand

Objective and Tasks

We have completed labs integrating App Volumes Manager with Horizon 8 and have learned how to assign an application, log into a virtual desktop and launch an App Volumes application. This exercise will have you take the next steps to connect an App Volumes application on demand, publishing Notepad++ to an RDS Farm.  

  1. Log into the Horizon admin console
  2. Add App Volumes application to the RDS Farm 'Application Pool'

Open the Chrome Browser, user the shortcut in the bookmark bar to connect to horizon-02a. Accept any notifications presented at the logon screen.

  1. If you have navigated away from the Horizon admin console for horizon-02a, then go back to the ControlCenter.
  2. Log in to the Horizon admin console.
  3. Username: administrator
  4. Password : Pa$$w0rd
  5. Domain: OmnissaTraining
  6. Click SIGN IN

Create-validate Assignments, explore the configuration for the Notepad++ application, package and program.

Set-confirm Package marker is set to CURRENT.

Validate the details under the Programs

  1. From the Horizon admin console, add an App Volumes application to the Application Pools
    • Click on the Inventory > Applications tab
  2. Make an administrative change for this lab to the listed Notepad application
    • Click NotepadS2
    • Click on EDIT
    • Scroll down and uncheck 'Pre-Launch'
    • Click on SUBMIT
  3. Add an App Volumes Application
    • Click on the Inventory > Applications tab
    • Click ADD
    • Select 'Add from App Volumes Manager'

Previously we integrated the App Volumes Manager with Horizon. We also updated the RDS Farm with the App Volumes Agent. Now observe the 'Add Application Pool' screen, showing the RDS Farm 'RDSFarmS2' associated with App Volumes Manager Server 'appvol-02a.omnissatraining.com' and listing all the App Volumes applications currently enumerated.

  1. Select the Notepad++ application and define the parameters
    • Click on the checkbox next to 'Notepad++'
    • Click on NEXT
    • ID: 'AppVol-NotepadPP'
    • Display Name: 'Notepad++(AV)'
    • Click on SUBMIT
  2. Add user group entitling them to Notepad++
    • click on ADD
    • Next to the Name/User Name search field: 'horizon-students'
    • Click on FIND
    • Select the checkbox next to 'Horizon-Students'
    • Click on OK
  3. Continue without any change in the 'Add Entitlements' section
    • Click on OK
  4. Confirm 'AppVol-Notepad' is listed as a new RDS Application
    • Review ID: AppVol-Notepad
    • Source: App Volumes
    • Display Name: Notepad++(AV)
    • Pool or Farm association: RDSFarmS2
    • Version of the Notepad++ : 8.9.1

This concludes this lab to configure App Volumes applications to Horizon RDS Farms as applications listed under the Application Pools. And launching the App Volumes application on demand.
