5. Using Writable Volumes with Omnissa Horizon Desktops

Section 1. Setting up and Configuring Writable Volumes
  1. On the ControlCenter
    • Launch the Site 1 Chrome browser
      • from the Favourites bar
        • select the App Volumes shortcut
  1. On the App Volumes login
    • in the Username area
      • enter Administrator
    • in the Password area
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
      • select LOGIN
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • In the INVENTORY area
      • select the Writables tab
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • Writable Volumes area
      • select CREATE
  1. In the Create Writable Volume area
    • next to Search Active Directory
      • enter Sales
        • to the right
          • select SEARCH
  1. In the Create Writable Volume area
    • in line with TECHSEALS\Sales
      • select the checkbox
  1. In the Create Writable Volume area
    • in line with Source Template:
      • from the dropdown
        • select appvolumes/writables_templates/template_uia_plus_profile.vmdk (10GB)
      • select the checkbox
    • in line with Exception Resolution:
      • from the dropdown
        • select Block user login
    • select the CREATE

Block user login:
When there is conflict due to a Writable Volume being attached elsewhere App Volumes will prevent the user from logging into any additional computers. This will protect users from conflicts that arise when a local profile interferes with their profile on the Writable Volume.

  1. In the Confirm Create Writable Volumes window
    • select CREATE
  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • Writable Volumes area
      • select the Refresh Icon
        • In line with TECHSEALS\Mark
          • select the Checkbox

Note the administrative options related to Individual Writable Volumes

  1. In the App Volumes admin console
    • Writable Volumes area
      • select the Refresh Icon
Section 2. Testing the use of Writable Volumes

About this test.  We will login to a Horizon Instant Clone Desktop Pool that has been configured to delete immediately at logOff.
What we will do is save a folder with files in on the local C:\drive.

We will then relogin to another Instant clone session to see if the Folder has been saved

  1. On the ControlCenter server Desktop
    • select the Omnissa Horizon Client
      • on the Omnissa Horizon Client
        • select horizon-01a.techseals.co

 

  1. In the Omnissa Horizon Client login
    • in the User name area
    • in the Password area
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • enter Login
  1. In the Omnissa Horizon Client login
    • select Enterprise_Desktop
  1. In the Horizon Desktop session
    • from the Taskbar
      • in the Search Area
        • enter CMD
      • in the Pop-Out
        • in line with the Command Prompt
          • select Open
  1. In the Command Prompt window
    • enter hostname
    • with your keyboard
      • select ENTER

Note the name of your virtual desktop

  1. In the Horizon Desktop session
    • from the Taskbar
      • in the Search Area
        • enter Windows
          • select Windows Tools
  1. In the Windows Tools area
    • select and right-click Computer Management
      • select Run as administrator
  1. In the User Account Control window
    • below User name
      • enter administrator
    • below Password
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • select Yes
  1. In the Computer Management window
    • below Storage
      • select Disk Management
    • to Close Computer Management
      • in the top right corner
        • select the X
    • to Close Windows Tools
      • in the top right corner
        • select the X

Notice you have a Disk 1 and Disk 1 has a Volume Label with CV Writable
Also notice that Disk 1 does not have an assigned Drive Letter
Note that this is by design as the Writable Volume is Volume Mount to the C:\ Partition

  1. On the Horizon Desktop session
    • from the Taskbar
      • select and right-click the START button
      • from the pop-up
        • select Run
  1. On the Run window
    • next to Open:
      • enter \\horizon-01a\software
        • select OK
  1. On the File Explorer window
    • Software Folder
      • open the Application folder
        • In the Application folder:
          • select and right-click Lab3.2_Only(App Volumes) folder
            • from the dropdown
              • select Copy
  1. On the File Explorer window
    • Quick Acces Bar
      1. select Local Disk (C:)
    • in the Local Disk (C:) area
      1. select - right click and Paste
      2. Note that you should now have a Lab3.2_Only(App Volumes) folder on your (C:) drive
  1. On your Horizon Virtual Desktop session
    • next to Fullscreen
      • select the MORE icon
        • from the dropdown
          • select Logoff Desktop
    • In the Disconnect and log off desktop? window
      • select OK
  1. On your w11Client-01a desktop
    • Horizon Client
      • select Disconnect
    • In the Log off server? window
      • select OK
  1. On the ControlCenter server Desktop
    • open the Site 1 browser
      • from the favourites bar
        • select the Horizon-01a shortcut
    • in the Horizon Login
      • In the user name area
        • enter administrator
      • in the password area
        • enter Pa$$w0rd
      • select SIGN IN
  1. In the Horizon Admin Console
    • below Inventory
      • select Machines

We are doing this extra step to remove any possibility of this been seen as a Party trick

  1. In the Machines area
    • next to the Virtual Desktop name you noted in your test earlier
      • select the checkbox
        • select REMOVE
      • In the Remove Virtual Machine window
        • select OK
  1. On the ControlCenter server Desktop
    • on the Omnissa Horizon Client
      • select horizon-01a.techseals.co

 

  1. In the Omnissa Horizon Client login
    • in the User name area
    • in the Password area
      • enter Pa$$w0rd
    • enter Login
  1. In the Omnissa Horizon Client login
    • select Enterprise_Desktop
  1. In the Horizon Desktop session
    • from the Taskbar
      • in the Search Area
        • enter CMD
      • in the Pop-Out
        • in line with the Command Prompt
          • select Open
  1. In the Command Prompt window
    • enter hostname
    • with your keyboard
      • select ENTER

Note the name of your virtual desktop

  1. In the Horizon Desktop session
    • from the Taskbar
      • select the File Explorer Icon
  1. On the File Explorer window
    • Quick Acces Bar
      • select Local Disk (C:)
        • in the Local Disk (C:) area
          • note that you still have your copied Data
