Lab 01: Installing the App Volumes Agent to an existing Virtual Desktop Pool (Instant Clones)
Important information:
At the launch of this lab make sure to copy the browser URL to this launched lab session to a notepad on your desktop. In the event the browser tab closes or encounter a network drop, you can use the URL to gain access to the lab session and resume.
Introduction:
You have set up the App Volumes Manager Server and connected to an existing Horizon 8 environment. You will update the virtual desktop pool with the App Volumes Agent, then capture, assign, update, and roll back an application package across production, UAT, and physical endpoints.
Update Horizon 8 desktop pool with App Volumes Agent
- Identify current golden image/snapshot for the desktop pool
- Update golden image with App Volumes Agent (via vCenter)
- Update desktop pool with new snapshot; validate registration
Capture Application (Notepad++ 8.9.6.2)
- Capture application; disable auto-update (GUP.exe)
- Set marker; assign to AD group AppVol_PRODUCTION_Users
- Validate assignment and launch
Update Application (8.9.6.2 → 8.9.7)
- UAT test with feedback prompt enabled; get user sentiment
- Assign v8.9.7 to AppVol_UAT_Users; validate assignment/launch
- Update CURRENT marker (auto-updates PRODUCTION assignment)
- Validate assignment and launch for PRODUCTION users
Stand up a physical Windows endpoint with App Volumes Agent and deliver via Computer assignment
- Install App Volumes Agent on a physical Windows endpoint
- Use Computer Assignment to target the endpoint
- Validate launch with a random domain user (outside above AD groups)
- Roll back package to a prior version; validate rollback effect

With the golden image being updated with the App Volumes Agent and a new snapshot taken, let's update the existing virtual desktop pool by pointing to the new snapshot
In the interest of time, this lab session uses a pre-staged snapshot. You will only need to promote the second image, already prepared in this lab environment. Following these steps completes the process within 3 minutes. Without pre-staging, updating the desktop pool from one snapshot to another takes an additional 10-12 minutes.
- Return to the Horizon admin console browser tab
- Put the virtual desktop pool into maintenance and update the pointer to the newly created av_agent snapshot
- From the Horizon admin console ,navigate to Inventory > Desktops
- Click the Win11-Site2 desktop pool
- Select the MAINTAIN drop-down menu
- Select Promote Secondary Image
- Click OK
- The below screenshot reflect the current state of the desktop pool with no App Volumes Agent listed, before the upgrade.
- The next screenshot shows the interim state when the desktop pool is preparing to swap out from the source image snapshot to the target.
- The desktop pool upgrade happens in under 3 minutes
- Post upgrade of the desktop pool, you can confirm the presence of the App Volumes Agent version 4.21.0-5081 listed.
- And the state of the desktop pool Windows 11 virtual machines has been provisioned and Status is Available
In approximately 3 minutes, the existing Windows desktop pool swaps out the existing virtual machines with newly created desktops from the target snapshot pre-staged in this lab.
Validate the success of the pool update and App Volumes Agent registration from the App Volumes Manager admin console
- Log in to the App Volumes Manager admin console
- Open another browser tab in Google Chrome
- Select appvol-02a from the bookmarks bar
- Enter the credentials.
- Username:
administrator - Password:
Pa$$w0rd
- Username:
- Click Login
- Validate the registration of the virtual desktop pool machines in the admin console
- Click DIRECTORY
- From the Active tab, now reflects the updated Horizon 8 desktop pool VMs Win11-S2-1$, Win11-S2-2$ and Win11-S2-3$ along with a list of other VMs that have App Volumes Agents installed and are powered ON.
- This step confirms that the virtual desktop pool is successfully updated, and the new VMs are registered and active in the App Volumes Manager admin console.
This concludes this section of the lab.
